Empress Maria Fyodorovna was the spouse of emperor Alexander III.

Christian's daughter, the prince Gljuksburgsky, subsequently Christian IX, the king of Denmark, the Princess of Denmark, till a marriage bore a name Marie Sophie Fredrica Dagmar, or Dagmar is simple.

Originally was the bride of cesarevitch the Nikolay Aleksandrovich, elder son Alexander II who have died in 1865. After his death there was an attachment between Dagmar and grand duke Alexander Aleksandrovich who together looked after for dying the Tsesarevich. Soon between them there was a love.

On June, 17th, 1866 engagement in Copenhagen has taken place; in three months the named bride has arrived to Kronstadt. On October, 13th has accepted Orthodoxy, having received a new name and a title — grand duchess Maria Fedorovna.

Wedding of the young has taken place in the Big church of the Winter palace on October, 28th (on November, 9th) 1866. After that spouses lived in Anichkovom a palace.

Maria, goodhearted and cheerful on character, has been warmly accepted in the light of. Its marriage with Alexander in spite of the fact that their relations were fastened under such mournful circumstances, has appeared successful. During almost thirty-year joint life of the spouse have kept to each other tender feelings.
